Car insurance in Delaware
Delaware is small enough to drive end to end in under two hours, but car insurance here is priced town by town and county by county, and the spread is real. Here is the state picture: what Delaware drivers pay on average, what the law requires, and where to look next.
What Delaware drivers pay on average
Full-coverage car insurance in Delaware averages about $241 a month for a 40-year-old driver with a clean record, roughly 3 percent above the national average. The state runs about $40 a month below neighboring New Jersey’s averages and sits in the middle of the pack nationally.
The county spread is bigger than people expect: New Castle County averages about $274 a month, Kent County about $223, and Sussex County about $210. That is a $64-a-month gap between the Wilmington metro and the beach towns for the same driver profile.
Averages are not quotes. Your own rate depends on your driving record, your vehicle, your coverage limits and your exact ZIP code. Ready to see real offers? Compare free car insurance quotes and pick the coverage that fits.
What Delaware requires you to carry
Delaware’s minimum liability limits are 25/50/10: $25,000 for injury to one person, $50,000 for injuries per accident and $10,000 for property damage. Every policy also carries personal injury protection (PIP) of $15,000/$30,000, and uninsured motorist coverage is included unless you reject it in writing. Delaware is a fault state, so the at-fault driver’s insurance pays first.
Minimum-coverage policies run about $111 a month on average statewide, but minimum limits leave you personally exposed above $10,000 of property damage, which most accident repairs blow past. See our full breakdown of Delaware’s minimum car insurance requirements.
